County Offaly is located in the Midlands, in the heart of Ireland, in the valley of the River Shannon and is bordered by counties Kildare, Laois, Tipperary, Roscommon, Westmeath and Galway. Offaly is know for its bogs, such as Kilballyskea Bog, one of the few remaining raised intact bogs in Ireland. It also has some fine forests, such as the expanse of oak wood at Charleville Castle , which has the famous “King Oak”, thought to be over 400 years old.
Offaly also has two designated heritage towns, Birr and Tullamore. Birr is well known for its Georgian architecture and Birr Castle, seat of the Earls of Rosse and one of the oldest inhabited homes in Ireland. There is a choice of Offaly hotels or guesthouses across the county.
In addition to having excellent gardens to explore, Birr Castle is also home to the Great Telescope which was built the 3rd Earl in the mid-19th century and was the largest telescope in the world until 1915. Charleville Castle is located in the area and is a fine example of a gothic house and was designed by Francis Johnston towards the end of the 18th century.
