County Louth is located on the East coast of Ireland, in the province of Leinster about one hour’s drive north of Dublin City and only 20 minutes from Dublin Airport. It is a small county that runs north from the River Boyne to Carlingford Lough. However, it has a rich and varied landscape with rugged coastline, rivers, lakes and fertile plains and the Cooley Peninsula.
Louth is a county rich in history and has a number of visitor attractions to enable you to explore its heritage. They include Roche Castle a 13th century ruin north of Dundalk, Mellifont Abbey which was established in the mid-12th century by St. Malachy of Armagh and is the first Cistercian monastery in Ireland. There are many high crosses located around the county and none more beautifully decorated than the Muiredeach’s Cross in Monasterboice. Also worth a visit is the 11th century Knockabbey Castle and Gardens located in Louth Village or Beaulieu House and Gardens near Drogheda. You can also visit the remains of St. Oliver Plunkett who was martyred in 1681 in St. Peter’s Cathedral in Drogheda.
The county also has a number of museums to visit, including the Millmount Museum in Dundalk, a barracks dating back to 1808 or the County Museum in Dundalk.
Louth Activities
There are plenty of activities to undertake in County Louth such as walking, golf, equestrian pursuits, cycling, adventure sports and water sports. For example, cycling on the Tain Trail Cycling Route, which runs from Co. Roscommon to the Cooley Peninsula for 365 miles, 95 of which are in County Louth.
Or enjoy scenic walking routes such as the Slieve Foy looped walk near Carlingford or the Tain Way – which has 40 km of its route in Louth and which follows the trail of the mythical Cattle Raid of Cooley. Water sports can be enjoyed at the Carlingford Marina and the Carlingford Adventure Centre or enjoy a day at the races at the Dundalk Stadium.
